Zen master 慧能 Hui Neng of Guangdong
On September 4, 2013, a commemoration ceremony was held for 六祖广东禅宗慧能 “Liu Zu Guangdong Chan Zong Hui Neng”, the “Sixth ancestral Zen Master Hui Neng of Guangdong”. It was the 1300th memorial of the death of Zen Master Hui Neng (638 – 713 A.D.).
Zen Master Hui Neng’s body is still on display in his temple in Guangdong province.
Hui Neng’s father died when he was three years old (641 A.D.). In a record of monks, Hui Neng was described as a filial son, and according to a biography of monks compiled in the Sung dynasty, at age 33 (671 A.D.), after his mother’s death, Hui Neng traveled north and sought out Zen Master Zhi Yuan who lived in a cave in norwestern Guangdong province in Lecang county to learn Zen Buddhism and then became a disciple of Zen Master Hui Ji to study the sutras. After achieving enlightenment, he returned south and taught for 40 years.
